There are many kinds of ants that that you might find around your home or buildings. They can range in size from about 1/32 to 3/4 inch long and can be colored yellowish, light brown, reddish-brown, brownish-black or jet black. Ants are insects and have 6 legs. You can distinguish between ants and termites by the following:
- The body of an ant appears constricted or pinched in at the waist. It is shaped like a figure 8. Termites do not have the waist constriction.
- Ants have elbowed antennae. Termites have straight, bead-like antennae.
- The forewings of ants are much larger than the hindwings. Termites' have front and rear wings that are equally shaped and sized.
- Ant wings are transparent or brownish. Termite wings are milky-white or grayish and are longer than the body.
- Ant wings are firmly attached to their bodies. Termite wings are easily removed or will easily fall off.
You can expect ant and especially carpenter ant activity for up to 4 weeks after treatment. You may notice they appear dead, lethargic or very active during this time. Call us if after 2-3 weeks the problem persists.
Termites primarily eat wood, but can also feast on paper, books, insulation, and even pool liners and filtration systems. Buildings can become infested at any time but when buying or selling a home, termites are of particular importance because a termite inspection/infestation report is normally a condition of sale. Getting rid of termites is a job for pest control professionals. You need to understand building construction to identify the areas where termites are likely to enter. Many of these potential points of entry are hidden and difficult to access. We also utilize specialized equipment for typical treatment may that may involve injecting liquid pesticide into the ground alongside the foundation, beneath concrete slabs, and within foundation walls. The termiticides we use are tested extensively for adverse effects on health. These products are independently evaluated by the U.S.E.P.A.. Based on the current body of knowledge, registered termiticides pose no significant hazard to humans, pets or the environment when applied according to label directions. If your neighbor has termites you wont necessarily get them too, but there is a real risk. Research shows one termite colony can live beneath two average-sized lots, so it is very possible that termites may be searching for food in or near to your home too. Call us for a thorough inspection of your property.
Mice are 3 to 4 inches long with small features. A mouse will eat just about anything, but they prefer cereal grains, seeds, or sweet material. They don't require much water. Rats are larger than mice, about 6-12 inches long. Most rodents are able to squeeze into and through very small spaces. Effective rodent control makes sure to seal as many holes and cracks as possible. Keeping clutter and wood away from your home or buildings is important too. Mice will feed on our bait usually within 48 hours if they don't have any other food available. You can expect minor activity for up to 14 days. Rats can take up to 14 days before they will enter the bait station to feed.
Indian Meal Moth
The Indian Meal Moth is reddish copper on its otherwise white wings and about 5/8 inches long. They will feed on most any food, including dog food, making it unusable. They generally enter homes in infested foods. They appear in all points of the food processing and storage chain. Inspect all dried food products and discard any infested products. Clean spilled and infested areas with vacuum and soapy water. Store all dried food in glass or plastic containers. You can expect minor activity for 14-21 days after treatment.
Cochroaches come in many sizes and varieties. The German cochroach is commonly found in homes and is about 1/2 inch in length. They are found throughout homes and busineses but prefer warm and humid surroundings. American Pest Control Systems focuses on kitchens and baths where cochroaches spend about 80% of their time resing in cracks and voids near their sources of food and water. Roaches enter buildings and homes commonly via paper products. They are scavengers and will eat nearly anything including soap, glue and toothpaste. As a professional exterminator, we have the expertise and persistance to deal with their rapid reproductive rates. At least 95% of the cochroach population must be eliminated in the first treatment or these pests will return. You will see an immediated reduction in the roach population following our treatment. It will take 15 days for the bait treatment to become fully effective.
Bed bugs appear mahogany to rusty brown but will turn red after feasting on blood from their victims. They are flat and oval in shape measuring about 1/4 inch. Bed bugs primarily live in beds but can also be found living behind baseboards, wallpaper, upholstery and in the crevices of furniture. They will gladly travel in your suitcase or boxes and shoes. They leave red, itchybites and fortunately do not transmit diseases. For the most part they will dine on humans but can go after any warm blooded animal. To control bed bugs vacuum suitcases after vacations and check your sheets for blood spots. They are elusive so be sure to call American Pest Control Systems if you suspect you have an infestation of bedbugs. You may expect minor activity for 10 to 14 days after treatment. Vacuum and/or launder weekly.
